bridge
it seems that the bay area is imploding. in case you haven’t heard, our bay bridge unravelled at the seams a few days ago and they had to shut the whole darn thing down. here’s an interesting engineer’s analysis of how the bridge failed.

hollywood
alas, the recession continues to prove that it’s pulling no punches. the guardian uk writes about how hollywood film output is plummeting. thankfully, for the moment, it appears that i’ll manage stay employed only because “sci-fi, superhero and mystic titles” are still somewhat considered a safe bet. (huge thanks to my bretheren geeks!)

in 1963, during the space race, the ussr sent up the first woman to space. to the russians, it made sense. women were lighter and would use up less fuel. meanwhile, in the united states, a program called ‘wise’ (woman in space earliest) was begun to test the feasibility of sending women astronauts into orbit.
