i
have all the early elvis costello albums on vinyl. i'm such a sucker
for the nerdy look, the quirky voice and woes of unrequited love.
in tribute to rhino record's re-release of all of elvis costello's
albums, terry
gross plays old interviews from declan macmanus himself.
finally!
everything you wanted to know about ninjas!!!

of
all the things i could possibly buy at amazon... i still can't quite
figure out why i would want this.

one
downside to not reading the comics regularly anymore is that i haven't
kept up on doonesbury. it's good to know the trudeau is still on
top of it. in today's episode, the
sin lobby gins up for another year.
deady
bears. need i say more?
how
incredibly exciting! dave
wilson, curator of culver city's absolutely wonderful museum of
jurassic technology, has won a macarthur genius grant!! hooray!

one
day, i will have to tell you the story about when i bought my rifle.
it was very... taxi driver. meanwhile, check out all the cute
ladies weapons for you and the rest of charlie's angels. my
favorite are the grenades. (link via the summer)
it's
minifig madness with everybody's latest obsession: lord
of the rings! (link via memepool)
i've
eaten some strange things in my time, but it's good to be reminded
that there's weird food wherever you go. ray
has a list. although i agree that balut is pretty disgusting
(the fetal chick is just a little too crunchy for my taste), i have
to disagree that bagong is disgusting. bagong is great. bagong is
good. my only question is... is spotted dick what i think it is?
google
always seems to come up with a reason for me to be in love with
it. here's the latest google
zeitgeist for you to ponder...
i
just bought tickets for the new
laurie anderson show that's premiering in los angeles this weekend.
something tells me this one will be good.
take
a bunch of elementary school students from the late 70's, make 'em
sing contemporary rock songs and you've got the weird wonderment
known as the langley
schools music project: innocence and despair. if space oddity
doesn't make you laugh, then you need a fresh batch of comedy supply
in your system. (link via zack)

this
parody site is so good, you won't believe it's not butter. answer
the questions on the american

i
saw this
link and couldn't help but laugh. next time you're playing sloshball,
ask yourself, 'what would jesus do?' (via dirty)

ebay
has everything you've ever wanted. how could you possibly resist
this?
it's high quality!
taking
a picture on a leaf is a pretty neat experiment using pinhole
photography and... leaves. (link via steve)

in
honor of the 20th anniversary of its theatrical release, i would
like to present to you... tronkillerapp!
(link via steve)
steve's
been avoiding work a lot lately, i can tell. otherwise, he wouldn't
have sent me this other frightening link about snaxpo,
the snack food association's 2001 convention. i think my next
vacation is going to be spent in lima, ohio. mmmm... pork rinds...
fellow
filmmaker jason
wishnow survived a week at sundance last year with $31 in his pocket
and lived to tell the tale. i told him i'd make a care package
for him the next time he goes...

i
usually look forward to buying the newest issue of colors, which
is an impressive photojournalism magazine made up surprisingly by
benneton photographers. unfortunatey, when i saw the
latest issue on madness at the newsstands, it was a little too
disturbing for me to buy.
i
love dominoes. i love the image of old cuban men playing dominoes
in hot tropical climes. i loved making an entire set of giant 4'x3'
dominoes to play a game that would last hours. get your pips in
order, because here's everything
you ever wanted to know about dominoes and more...
wow!
just what every space nerd needs... a solar

another
kodak moment brought to you buy the surveillance
camera players! (link via wayneco)
luckily,
my 256mb compactflash card will be arriving in the mail via fedex.
unfortunately, any
compactflash cards being sent through regular mail may be destroyed
due to the u.s. postal service's latest battle against anthrax.
having
worked with computer graphics for the past six years, i'm a little
distressed that i only got 9 out of 10 of these correct. on the
other hand, i shouldn't really complain. fake
or foto is an interesting site that tests your ability to determine
what is a photographic image and what was generated by pixels. (link

just
so you know... the
page cannot be fucking displayed.
despite
the fact that i turned a job down at pixar, i'm still a big fan
of all their work. it's great that
the los angeles county museum of art will be holding a tribute for
pixar this thursday.

google
has been delving into their usenet archives and are mapping
out significant events in usenet's history (first mention of
microsoft, early references to emoticons, first mention of the simpsons,
etc.) deep down inside, you know the nerd in you wants to see it.
this
latest development in biotech makes me think of roy's conversation
with chu in blade runner. "if you could see the things that
i have seen with your eyes."
here's
more
interesting news on ways of seeing. hmmm.. i'm almost tempted
to justify any chemical intake i do as a step forward in the advancement
of visual science. almost.

now, ladies and gentlemen, for your random collection of statistics
of the day, the

the
sound samples available at the uk national sound archive are
way cool. right now i'm listening to bumblebees. just a second ago,
i was listening to steelworkers. as my friend from australia would
say every now and then, "give it a go!"
i,
like most everyone else, hate carnivore. or at least, i did until
i found out about the
carnivore art project. you have to admit that art based on streaming
data is pretty neat.
despite
the fact that the bankruptcy of polaroid usa makes me terribly sad,
i think it's great that their photography
collection will be sold to museums worldwide. or at least, one
can only hope that it goes to museums rather than primarily private
collectors.
animation
by my favorite kid. how much more surreal can you get than with
a three year old?
while
talking to my co-worker about the incredibly creepy movie phase
iv, a story about super-intelligent ants that terrorize a bunch
of scientists, i discovered the wonderful wonderment of saul
bass, probably one of the best title designers ever to grace
the screens of hollywood. his credit list is absolutely amazing.
he's definitely a heavy influence for the opening credit sequence
for monsters, inc.
01.02.02
i
just spent the last hellish holiday week in lost angeles, visiting
my family. even though i grew up there, i always seem to forget
how much media there is about media until i look up and see all
the billboards and full page ads for television, movies and music.
fortunately, it gave me the opportunity to watch robert altman's
latest film, gosford
park, which is good... if you like altman films. fortunately,
i like altman, so i was entertained.
i
also caught lantana,
a murder mystery from australia. i wasn't super enthused about it,
but there are apparently good reviews about this film, so you don't
necessarily have to take my word on it.
unfortunately,
i was unable to see happenstance,
starring audrey tatou (amelie). i'm anxiously waiting for this to
arrive in san francisco, which will hopefully be soon. i think i
might secretly have a crush on audrey. don't tell anyone, though.
if
you happen to find yourself in los angeles and have a hankering
for some meat, you might want to check out
barrio fiesta, a new filipino restaraunt reviewed by the l.a.
times. i haven't had a chance to check it out though, so you'll
have to tell me if you like it or not.
01.01.02
happy
new year! i hope that this year will be a better one than last for
most of us, because last year seemed particularly sucky for pretty
much everyone i know. a toast to temporal transitionary phases!
one
of the first things i used to have a hard time adapting to in january
was writing the new year on my checks. it occurred to me today that
with debit cards and on-line billing, there really aren't very many
checks left for me to write anymore. it's good to get rid of another
neurosis.
for
all intents and purposes, the islais creek neighborhood was a place
that i called home for several years. i usually don't link to petitions
or anything, but this one is pretty dear to my heart. if you're
at all concerned about arts in san francisco, please
include your thoughts and name on the illinois street bridge petition
to stop construction which would essentially raze the arts community
that thrives there. the arts have been battered enough in this city.
we don't deserve another blow.
the
gunnery sgt. r. lee ermey action figure isn't a toy i'd buy
for any kid i know, but some of the sound bites are pretty funny.
a
friend of mine brought some folks over from berlin's chaos computer
club to a party at my house a little while ago. lately, i've been
delighted to see their latest project make the memes: blinkenlights!
i
think i might pop from anticipation while waiting for gigantic:
a tale of two johns to come out! ahhhh... more they might be
giants propaganda for me to fetishize over.
do
you really want windows
2000 running your military? be afraid. be very, very afraid.
fortunately,
i'm finding more and more shorts that i've seen at film festivals
pop up for repeated viewing here on this ol' internet. anarchy
monkey played at the short attention span film festival 2000
and was a hit with the kids.
when
advertising executives and divorce lawyers get together, the
results are most certainly going to be evil.
