infinitecat
is a strange concept. but i guess strange concepts are what the
internet is all about.
the
more i read and see things about a scanner darkly, the less jaded
i get about it; i'm beginning to really look forward to this. i
wish i could draw because linklatter
is hiring artists.
i
think that this
hungarian ad is for sausages, but i can't focus so well when
i'm laughing this hard. (link via steve)

when
i first moved to san francisco, i used to own this giant friggin'
rabbit. i called him bass, 'cause he thumped. josh called him bitey.
back then, i learned that rabbits, being prey animals, can commit
suicide by kicking so hard that it breaks their spine. it turns
out that someone
has been drawing cartoons of more clever ways of rabbit suicide.

is
there anything that google can't do? apparently not - now
you can search for videos on line.
what
an awesome fetish: women
in spacesuits (link via wayneco)
salon
reviews the revolution that failed - a book that sounds pretty
interesting about the big time indie directors of the 90's. sounds
like a book that might be a good pairing with easy riders, raging
bulls.

hear
ye, hear ye. the society of rockets will be playing at hotel utah
(4th & bryant) this friday, january 28th! admission is a mere
$6.00. check out the
show poster that josh drew and then buy the theremin player
a drink.
on
the origami front: i'm working on a large scale origami exhibit!
i don't have pictures yet, but i'll be sure to let you folks know
where to check it out.

i've
gotten two great links from steve today, and humorously enough,
they were both specific to january 24th.
on
january 24th, 21 years ago, steve
jobs introduces the macintosh
and
hopefully unrelated, january
24th has been calculated to be the most depressing day of the year.
oedipus
gets another good blurb. if you happen to be in new york, los
angeles, san francisco, san jose, denver, rhode island or manchester,
you should try to check
out one of the screenings that are going to be happening near you.
01.22.05
mike
(former shimmer kids drummer) sent me this link to a video clip
of the theremin
bra. it's a wacky idea... but she's a really bad theremin player.
01.20.05
sorry,
haven't been able to update lately. we've been having problems with
our internets at home. i knew i should have bought more.
my
favorite word from the spelling bee: azygophrenia
(n) the psychoneurosis of everyday unmarried life.
i
finally got to catch a glimpse of the 2005
ladies of fnf calendar. it turns out that i'm ms. january! ah
- once again, i prove that i'll pretty much do anything for the
sake of comedy. buy a calendar! it's good for you.
01.17.05
brian
sent out this link of some beautiful
photography of hong kong hive architecture.
now,
before you start accusing me, i'll be the first to say that yes,
i am now obsessed with any and all life aquatic. ben forwarded me
this link to weird
fishes found near new zealand and australia. i particularly
like the squid that can camoflauge itself by emitting light and
the giant rattail fishes with the 'drum machine on their swim bladder
that is used to attract females.'
01.16.05
last
night i competed in an (unnamed) local bar's stoned spelling bee
with about 30 other contestants. they 'prepped' us in the green
room (hah) and then made us spell in front of a full audience. it
was like the gong show, but with more consonants. i was the first
one up with 'prophylactic' and lasted three more rounds but wound
up losing at fifth place. ah well, c'est la vie. win or lose, it
doesn't matter, 'cause it's things like these that make me realize
that i love san francisco.
pitchfork
reviewed sunset homes and they loved it! i like their description
of my theremin playing as a 'satisfyingly precocious wobble"
mainly because i think that's what my everyday existence feels like.
as
long as we're on the subject of recordings, i've been digitizing
all my old radio shows from college. six freaking years of it! anyway,
i was researching the difference between 16/24/32 bit and found
this
informative article demystifying some of the mystery.
01.14.05
i
went to go see kid
beyond perform in bright
river last night. each time i see him, i'm totally blown away
by his beatboxing and this was no exception, especially since he
did all the sound design for the play right there on stage. tim
barsky, the writer and actor performing the piece also plays a mean
beatboxing flute. think roland kirk, but more percussion (and less
coke).
you've
probably already heard, but eric idle has turned monty
python's holy grail into a musical. at first i was skeptical,
but then found out that it's directed by mike nichols and stars
hank azaria, tim curry and david hyde pierce. now i'm sold.
this
sounds like a monty python sketch, or at the very least, an onion
article, but no - it's from the new scientist! here's wacky
chemical warfare ideas from the pentagon! (link via rusty)
01.13.05
i
heart borat.
(thanks to rusty & jory for the link)
i
saw life
aquatic again the other night. it was even better the second
time around. the teaser trailer to hitchhiker's
guide to the galaxy was attached to it and for some reason it
made me nervous. i think the main fact that it's a disney movie
gives me the sinking feeling that it might be bad. cup of tea?
gizella
has a new photoblog. i love the idea of posting a photo a day
- i've really enjoyed watching her skills as a photographer develop
over the years and am looking forward to seeing her site evolve
over time.
01.11.05
we're
living the life aquatic here in california right now. san francisco
was hit with a pretty intense rainstorm last night and southern
california is going underwater. it's the apocalypse under the guise
of global warming. here's some crazy footage of some
kid surfing in topanga canyon. it's a little disconcerting considering
that i used to drive through topanga canyon every day when i was
commuting from the valley to the west side oh so long ago. (link
via monty luke)
01.10.05
i'm
having a little bit of trouble playing this wmv on my mac, but here's
a link to jory
showing off the oqo at last week's ces.
i
just stumbled upon brent's
photos of the stop motion birthday party which dave d. &
i had back in november (thanks for taking the pics, brent!).
totally
gorgeous
microscopy photography. (link via brian)
01.09.05
the
state of independent theaters in san francisco isn't as depressing
as i once thought it was. the
sf bay guardian gives a brief update on the castro and the four
star. humorously enough, the castro makes me happy about dystopia.
i
forgot to mention that one of my highlights of going back home for
christmas was that my mom had a bout of filipino food guilt. since
she doesn't cook, we haven't had filipino food in years. instead
of attempting to cook on her own, she brought us to the super fancy
yi
cuisine restaurant. it was really good. who would have possibly
thought that haute filipino food existed???
01.07.05
whatever's
been going around has finally gotten to me. i'm at home, sick, surfing
the web, as opposed to at work, healthy, surfing the web.
in
my woozy haze, i finished reading jonathan lethem's men
and cartoons. great short stories and a good way to spend some
woozy time. his story, the dystopian, has a nice haruki murakami
touch to it.
i
didn't know how anyone was going to do a feature film of a scanner
darkly. first off, it's a tough book to interpret to film. second
off, can't we leave pkd books alone? i mean, yeah, he was a genius,
but i'd love some original content from studios sometime. despite
my griping, these
images from linklatter look pretty good. (link via dave
i.)
it's
storming outside right now in san francisco and i'm bedbound. this
means you get more to read. after driving through pennsylvania and
visiting niagara falls, i stopped off in rochester, new york, which
has the kodak-eastman international museum
of photography and film.
01.06.05
more
frame by frame fun: steve forwarded me this link to a bunch of eastern
european stop motion animation.
possibly
not work safe, but really, really funny: the
saga of bloodninja. when cybersex gets pranked. (link via miss
meliss)
damnit,
my robosapien is already a thing of the past. jon sent me this link
to the robosapien
v2. as jon says "of course yours is already an outdated
model that will join you in the future to save you from impending
doom as the new models seek to destroy you." i better learn
how to arm my robot sometime pretty soon.
01.04.05
one
of the coolest things about christmas is that my sister got me a
robosapien.
i brought it into work today and now i'm trying to figure out how
to make it operate the avid. if i could figure out something like
homer did with the little drinking bird toy, then i'll be living
on easy street.
dave
i. found this 'name
that tune' site where you can try to guess the correct shimmer kids
tune. you can actually do it with any band, but it was good
to know that i could identify all our songs. i hope i passed the
audition.
happy
birthday, merin! your last year was particularly awesome. i hope
this next year gets even better!
01.03.05
i
thought something funny was happening last year. salon
writes about satire in 2004.
note
to self: when driving, don't
wear the snake.
01.02.05
happy
new year, everyone! welcome to double aught five. i used to make
all these jokes about how it was going to be hard to write the new
year on all my checks. now that joke is dated (dated. get it?) 'cause
i do all my banking with these here newfangled computers. i'll need
to come up with a new new year's punch line in this futuristic sci-fi
age.
speaking
of the futuristic sci-fi age - here's a flying
car photo album. (link via memepool)
not
a flying car, but hybrid-electric - an honda
insight is featured at the end of the 'be cool' trailer. admittedly,
the movie looks like it's going to be bad, but i love the line about
how "if you're important, people will wait..." when you
choose efficiency over speed.
8
reasons i think i should get a raise that my boss doesn't agree
with.
fallingwater
sort of tripped me out. i spent the night in pittsburgh and then
headed north towards the water falling at niagara
falls.
