due to circumstances way beyond my control, i was faced with the reality of taking public transportation out to work last week. normally, i love taking public transit, but marin county is the great satan of anti-public transportation and it took me two hours ~each way~ to go to and come back from work. four hours a day! the upside of it is that in the space of four days, i was able to finish motherless brooklyn, read how to read a french fry and amnesia moon (each within a day) and catch up on the latest eightball. all good stuff. if it weren't for the sleep deprivation involved with waking up at 5:30 in the morning to catch the bus, i'd contemplate taking public transit to work more often.

my buddy, matt, just moved to kansas and told me that he now lives about 100 miles away from the largest twine ball in the world. wow! i told him that he has to go to the twine-a-thon because i'm dying to know what the heck it is they do at this... "a-thon."

being the geeks they are, they might be giants have been making a lot of flash videos for their mink car songs. the latest is cyclops rock.

being the geek that i am, here's a great interview with they might be giants. it's probably a good idea to ignore all the typos, though. (link via brice)

these questions seemed pretty easy... but it's always fun to check out yet another simpsons quiz.

i saw willie nelson at the fillmore with my friend mindy for her birthday. all's i gotta say is that when i'm 60, i want to be able to play music nonstop for three hours to an adoring audience. it was amazing.

let's say that we crazy americans kept track of time like those wacky europeans. if that were the case, then 10:02pm would read 20:02 - 02.20.2002. (i, palindrome, i)

now let's say that we're in europe. will you be travelling soon? if so, these are the phrases you should know. they're very important. (link via herve)

other important things: the summer wants you to know about peeps. she wants you to know everything about peeps.

hooray! a new miyazaki movie is coming out!! here's any and all media for you miyazaki fetishists to enjoy. i can't wait.

more wacky traffic signs equals more fun. don't fall. (thanks to chris for the link)

i'm humbly honored to announce that bury my heart at makeout point made jumping fence's list as one of the best albums of 2000. shimmer kids power, activate!

i know it's not valentine's day anymore, but i still can't help but enjoy watching these animations of cupid getting slaughtered. (link via summer)

the bastards at aol-time-warner-whatsit-megaconglomerate have decided to get rid of their vinyl production facilities to make way for... dvd production. bah! (mike's link)

i'm not sure if this is still going on, but the hollywood shadow project in los angeles is a very cool installation.

02.12.02

come on. secretly, you and i know that valentine's day is a scam. this is why all the heart breakers and all the broken hearted will be spending their v-day with the kids that they truly love. the shimmer kids underpop association will be wooing you with star-crossed lyrics and trembling theremin at edinburgh castle (950 geary street) this thursday, in the jaded streets of san francisco. buy the theremin player a drink. i hear she likes that kind of thing.

congratulations to peter jackson! who would have thought that the same person who made meet the feebles and brain dead would have 13 academy award nominations today? i'll bet you a dollar that he's pretty drunk on champagne this evening.

despite the fact that lord of the rings is an excellent movie, i'm still hoping that a.i. wins best visual effects. it will be the first movie i'll have worked on to win an academy award!

"hey! let's go do some crimes! let's go get sushi and not pay!" (i'd like to thank the academy and my sister, dawn, for this link)

this is reminiscent of the 'take on me' video by a-ha. be sure to shrink your browser window to the smallest size you can. it's cute. it's hip. it's wow. (link via jory)

rumor has it that there's a new krispy kreme in daly city. nuts to that! i can (and so can you) order donuts online! don't forget to get some coffee while you're at it. (link via dave)

ok... so i have this weird fetish about traffic signs (don't ask). anyway, this is why i'm attracted to the site that shows you traffic signs around the world (found on misterpants)

i've finally wrangled a few pictures of the bocce ball game that i had taken from last sunday at dolores park. eric has them up on his site as well as an excellent description on how to play. i'm particularly enamoured by his description of what clothes should be worn for a game. funny stuff.

this site of filipino recipes makes me hungry. not for the diniguan, though. stay away from the diniguan.

my friend mikey builds go karts at trackmagic.com. their tech page is pretty cool and has all kinds of information you never knew about racing karts.

they say to not try it at home... which is why i'm going to try it at work. ladies and gentlemen... stupid microwave tricks! (thanks, steve)

this is, undoubtedly, the best picture ever. (link via jim)

i always thought it was a little odd that the few jamaican people i know do not smoke pot. the way the media pushes it, you'd think jamaicans were born with thc in their blood. npr reports on the decriminilization of marijuana in jamaica.

ben has just introduced me to the animated star trek episode titled 'the lorelei signal.' i have to admit that i've known about this episode for awhile, but i've never felt to compelled to see it until ben told me that the signal the enterprise receives is a theremin!!! that's so exquisitely perfect; i must find this episode!!

after a wonderful game of playing bocce ball in the park, i have decided that bocce ball is fantastic. those italians sure know how to spend a lazy day with style.

i went and saw project pimento last night. theremin lounge music, how could i possibly resist? if you want to see some theremin playing done really well, you should go check them out sometime.

cherry high school west in philadelphia has decided that they can no longer afford to rent films for their 30 year old film course. dvds may be cool, but absolutely nothing compares to film. i hope that the funds are found to keep the sprockets running. (thanks to jory for the link)

i don't know where i would be if it weren't for my powerbook and my moog-designed thermin. life would definitely be a lot less wacky. congratulations to apple and robert moog for their lifetime achievement grammy awards.
