i recently stumbled across this wonderful tribute to margaret booth, one of film editing's great, grand dames, who passed away last november. the weird thing is that i can't quite figure out why this filed under sex, rather than, say, arts and entertainment, or even in their life section.

the countdown has begun on my departure to japan. by next tuesday i'll be in the air and barely able to contain myself. as it is, i can barely even contain myself now.

jim thinks i should get some of these while i'm there. i think he is incorrect!

on the other hand, lars thinks i should spend at least one 24 hour period watching nothing but japanese tv. after reading about oh! super milk-chan, i'm kind of tempted. (link via gmtplus9)

angela took 8,000 digital photos when she spent two weeks in japan. when she told me that, it occurred to me that my 1gb compactflash card would be a puny match for the visual weirdness of where i'm going. fortunately, one of my co-workers happened to be selling one of these vosonic personal digital storage devices... i'll have to report on how it holds up when i get back.

it looks like the new beat takeshi movie might be out while i'm in japan! oh my god, i'd be super-excited to see it! even if i had no idea what anyone was saying, takeshi's films are usually pretty minimal on the dialogue. how could i possibly resist him playing a blind samurai?! (link via nej)

i've been going through the japanblogger's webring to see if anyone mentions anything interesting to do out there. it seems the new big thing is moblogging. blogging from your webphone.

i was talking to one of my friends about how it seems like everyone is speeding past me with all their grown-up phases and then he reminded me that i'm just as crazy as they are because i'm putting my sister through college. how could i have possibly forgotten something like that? anyway, michelle just finished (survived) her first year at reed college in portland! yay! as far as i can tell, reed seems a lot like uc santa cruz was when i was going there; it's just much, much (much) more expensive. i'm super-proud of her, btw.

alas, i won't be able to make this, but willy wonka and the chocolate factory will be playing tonight at the illustrious, glorious and fantastic paramount theater. you should go! if anything, it'll make you think of even more adjectives.

a sewage company in costa mesa wants to educate children about the real facts of flushing nemo down the toilet. hey kids! just so you know, nemo would never make it to the ocean; first he'd be shredded to a pulp and then chemically destroyed with chlorine disenfectant. there, there, don't you feel smarter now? ("don't worry timmy, it's not really a killing floor, more like a sluice!")

a new haruki murakami story! online, even! (link via jory)

not too many links today, but i just wanted to give my love and happiness to the following people:

adam, my oldest friend, and his beautiful partner, su-yun, for tying the knot this weekend (you've betrayed me, though. i thought we were all going to be young and single forever!) we'll all be in calistoga to witness the whole commitment thing happen right there, before our eyes.

rusty and merin for finally announcing their engagement! mike thought that they were already married.

steve and geri for their beautiful baby gal! oh, by the way, happy birthday, steve!

jill and mike, for buying their new home!

ok... i have to admit, it's a little dizzying to see so many of my friends going through these major life shifts, when my biggest news is i'm going on vacation. (wahoo! vacation!) sometimes i feel like that lichtenstein painting. you know the one. the close-up of the woman looking panicked, thinking "oh my god! i forgot to have children!"

something of a depressing link: i've always bemoaned the moment that uc santa cruz finally allowed frats and sororities on campus. this is one of the reasons why. (cue old geezer voice) back in my day, we wouldn't do shit like this. we'd just eat some mushrooms and stare at the sky...

oh wait, no. here's my cool news. check out ang lee and i being super happy that all the effects work on the hulk is complete. (hulk crush lorelei soul. lorelei vacation need! -=smash!=-)
