jay and i finally got to see takeshi kitano's new movie, brother, today. although it's no hana-bi, the ultra-violent yakuza gang war scenes were pretty cathartic. i don't know how much life it has in the theaters, but if comes 'round your way, you should check it out.

have you ever wondered what it looks like when transparent octopi have sex? i have.

wow. listen to jonathan lethem interview haruki murakami. i love murakami's reading of 'super frog saves tokyo.' listening to the story in japanese is almost as enjoyable as hearing it in english - and hey, if there's anything more fascinating than written murakami stream of conscious, then it's unscripted oral murakami stream of conscious.

oh dear god. the simpsons dvds have commentaries. the anticipation is killing me.

i've found another reason to become enamoured with nasa's genesis craft. it looks like a gigantic watch in space.

07.29.01

the only relevant information i need to know about the movie ghost world, is that that terry zwigoff and daniel cloves are driving the bus. it is absolutely necessary that i see this film.

although i believe that digital video is here to stay, i don't believe this necessarily means that film is out the door. i do have to admit i like the comparison between shooting hd video and singing karaoke. wait... you've never seen me sing karaoke before, have you?

most action-packed experiment of the day goes to: nasa's genesis craft, set to launch on monday. solar winds! helicopters! i almost expect bruce willis to appear with a dry-witted remark.

it's true. there are a lot of cool murals in santa cruz. (via gmtplus9)

my friend glenn just finished working on jay and silent bob strike back. i gotta admit, even with ben affleck (-=shiver=-), this movie looks really funny.

07.26.01

honestly, i really have no idea how this week can get any worse. it started with me being angrier and more violent than i've ever experienced in my life, i've completely lost my appetite, i have insomnia, and now all the records have flown off the roof of my car. where's my time machine? i need to jump forward a few months to get out of here...

you would think that microsoft humor would get old after awhile, but, darnit, i find this funny. (link via wayneco)

my band, the shimmer kids underpop association, will be playing a gala performance tonight at cafe dunord on market street here in glorious san francisco. we'll be opening for the andy peters show and you should be there. ok? ok.

i'm going to collect them all! nobody can resist psychedelic republican trading cards! (thanks to dj doublekick for the link)

it looks like kelley's out of rehab and kim's back to being a rock star - the breeders are back.

i read mister pants because he finds the links about ssri's and chicken soup for the soul. more paxil!!

i used to go set off explosives in the desert with my friend kal. as it turns out, kal also blows things up for art, and it's actually pretty cool. his band of pyros, the seemen, have just finished a show at mit and will be performing this weekend in new york. if you're on that side of the continent, check it out. you'll like it.

in concept, this picture of the internet should be really cool - but the fact that it doesn't accept jpegs seems a little distressing (and no, i'm not just looking for the porn) (link via littleyellowdifferent)

how could you not find shatneroids entertaining? (thanks to giz for the link)

while we're on the topic of virtually destroying celebrities, why don't we just drive over jakob nielsen? (via metafilter)

07.17.01

this is horribly, horribly wrong. the national oak flooring manufacturer's association has taken the lorax and spit on theodore geisel's grave.

07.15.01

i know things can get crazy and depressing sometimes, but this is fucking insane.

spacelounge people look here. if the word spacelounge means nothing to you, pay no attention to this link. move along. move along.

07.14.01

i thought it would never happen, but lynda barry is back! hooray!

it's good to know that schools in the uk are concerned about teaching their kids semantics.

07.13.01

i've just joined the forces with the folks over at photographica.org. if you're into photography, this is a nice site to share your sights.

thanks to the wonderful folks at cockeyed laboratories, we now know how much silly can be found in silly string!

the host of one of my favorite public radio shows just so happens to be the second cousin to one of my favorite minimalist composers. go figure. check out this interview with this american life's ira glass talking to the one and only philip glass.

for inexplicable reasons, i'm a sucker for haiku. i even like the bits about the seasons. (link supplied by wayneco)

note to self: when deaf - do not cross train tracks.

i just got back from watching final fantasy: the spirits within. true to its form, it felt a lot like watching those movies at the beginning of playstation games. unfortunately, that didn't really interest for the duration of the movie. to its credit, it looks amazing. there's some pretty incredible cloth and hair animation, but the lip sync was always just slightly off, which kept distracting me. you might want to check it out if you plan to kill an afternoon at a matinee.

i also just finished watching the william shatner commentary on the incubus dvd. if you haven't seen this classic movie filmed entirely in esperanto, you must rent this. shatner doesn't say a whole lot during the commentary, but every word is pure entertainment.

harrison ford rescues another wayward hiker. i almost feel like i should get lost in the woods.

the next time i play dominoes, i'm going to have to keep my eye out for the cows. beware the cow.

huh... so that's what serotonin looks like.

trytophan is also a beautiful thing.

07.09.01

i have just finished reading sputnik sweetheart, haruki murakami's latest translated fiction. it was good, but really depressing. if i just watched umbrellas of cherbourg and listened to elvis costello's blood and chocolate, i'd have the perfect multimedia recipe for some pill poppin' suicide.

i keep getting these irritating emails from crushlink.com indicating that someone has registered their crush with me on their site. whoever this person is, they've done nothing but get crushlink to send me tons and tons of spam. please, for the love of god, make them stop.

07.05.01

whatshouldiputonthefence.com is one of the reasons why i think the internet is still a good place. on the internet, even the tiniest bit of comedic rebellion gets its heydey.

i know i usually don't post anything star wars related because... well... let's just say that i don't want to get in trouble with the boss and it would do nothing but prove what a total nerd i am. with that out of the way, i wanted to show you this. i'm hoping that i'm not the only one who thinks this is funny.

07.04.01

happy independence day. who would have thought, but i have the greatest view of fireworks right outside my bedroom window. every now and again, i find it pretty entertaining to have illegal explosives around.

while i appreciate the fact that time magazine has chosen ang lee as america's best director, i have to disagree that crouching tiger, hidden dragon is a martial arts film that is "something completely original". i think a statement like that could only be made by someone who hasn't seen a lot of martial arts films.

as of late, i've suddenly found myself with a lot more time on my hands than i'm used to. because of this, i've finally been able to finish albert glinsky's theremin: ether music and espionage. this is probably some of the best research available on the life and times of leon theremin, going into far greater detail about his 94 year life span than steven m. martin's "theremin: an electronic oddessy".

i also just finished mr. lunch takes an airplane ride i swear i bought it for my favorite two year old. ok... i have to admit that i bought a copy for myself too - but how could i possibly resist an artist who's made a music video for they might be giants? there was just no way around it.

07.03.01

this is a little weird, but it's pretty fun. the actors have been photoshopped out of the picture and you have to guess what movie it's from. some seem to be more easy than others for me... (via swallowing tacks)

07.02.01

happy birthday, dawn!

i've always needed a quantitative analysis on panic. my favorite part is the fire exit simulation.

my passwords indicate that i'm a geek? hell, i could have told you that.
