this is the first year that it seems a good number of my friends are not out on the playa for labor day. out of the few that are still going, they are not taking art projects. i'm a little curious to see how the man has evolved (or devolved) since i last went in '97, but i don't feel compelled to pay the $250 entrance fee...

what i like about a good job posting is its frank honesty. if there are rolling donuts involved, that's even better. (link forwarded by bartle)

this news story about whistle tips seems somewhat mundane until bubrubb and little sis make their appearance. i can't help but be fascinated by how a whole website can be devoted to it; try the bubrubb sound board. it's disturbingly entertaining. you can blame anthony for this link (as well you should).

salon.com provides an excerpt from al franken's new book "the lying lies and the liars who tell them: a fair and balanced look at the right"

friendster has put me back in touch with some of the old bbs nerds that i used to be on-line with back in high school (ahhh.. back in the day before the "internet" with our fast-as-light 1200 baud modems). someone pointed out that milliways, an old bbs that i used to frequent has reconstructed itself at this site. trippy.

no link. i just wanted to say that this recall election fiasco is embarrassing. dan tells me that he heard barnum and bailey decided they didn't need to tour through california this year.

the sf chronicle does a write up of one of my favorite culture jammers, the billboard liberation front.

steve forwarded me this link about earworms. at first, i thought it had something to do with ricardo montalban doing something to walter koening, but then i realized that it was all about sanford and son.

if you're looking for something fun to do with your sunday afternoon and you want to get a couple songs stuck in your head, you should definitely come out to see our band!! we've organized our third annual toxic beach show and we'd love it if you all came. we'd love you forever if you brought beer, too!

jory found this really cool site which seems to be the next step in educational films. how everyday things are made was built by stanford university. (high bandwidth required)

ok... i have to admit. i finally logged onto friendster. now i'm boggled by how many people i know on there, it's really sort of weird. (no, they haven't asked me to drink the kool-aid)

domini let me tag along with her to the breakdancing class that she goes to in the mission. watch out! i know the robot! (or something...)

finally got a chance to the see whale rider the other day. it's really, really good. go see it if it's still playing at a theater near you. as much as i'm in love with peter jackson, it's great to know that the new zealand film industry doesn't consist entirely of lord of the rings.

i had the sanford and son theme song stuck in my head all goddamned day today.

i saw bounce ko gals last night as part of the san francisco 4 star's asian film festival. it was a surprisingly good movie with a a great soundtrack. i'd recommend it if you ever find yourself faced with that title at your local art house marquee. leg warmers and school girl uniforms for everyone!

if i ate meat... i would definitely cook my hot dogs with an octodog! (link via chris)

gigantic (a tale of two johns) plays at the castro theater this week! i was fortunate and nerdy enough to see a special sneak preview of it a few months ago and i have to say, if you're a tmbg fan, go see it!! now. why are you still reading this? my only critique is that it feels a little too long, but i think that's the film editor in me talking, not the tmbg fan in me. it's definitely a must-see, though.

thanks, once again, to the invaluable students of mit, we have the table of condiments that periodically go bad. (link via steve)

the other night, at 1am in the morning, jory (a former invaluable student of mit, a current invaluable friend) called me up and told me that he had just gotten off the plane from new york... and he had bagels with him! now, this is a true friend. a bagel at one in the morning has never tasted soooo good.

just the other day, i was saying to a friend that i think i may be a zombie. i realized that i only seem to like my friends for their brains. in a completely unrelated discussion, pete forwarded me this link to the brain store. mmmmm... brains.

i love creative protest.

i also love the vandals. they do a great punk rock version of 'summer lovin' from the grease soundtrack. go, zappas, go!
