this is pretty cool; i'm surprised i've never dealt with it before: daily doonesbury comic strips, from 5, 10, 15, 20, 25 & 30 years ago. it's sort of cool to see everything condensed like this.

here's the latest in my stop motion adventures. requires quicktime 6 and a few minutes to load. (by the way, happy birthday, dave!)

i had an itching to see annie hall again lately, so i watched it other night. it's one of those films that's just nice to revisit every now and then because it's just that good. la-di-da.

the craziest thing happened to me last night. i was driving along geary, minding my own business, when i saw a person collapse on the sidewalk, slam the back of his head against the wall as he fell, and his body sort of went rigid on the ground. i pulled over, leapt out of the car, called 911 and suddenly, that cpr/first aid class that i took last year became very, very relevant. it also helped me to keep from freaking the hell out when he started bleeding from the back of the head (it was pooling on the ground underneath him, just like in the movies). i totally recommend getting yourself certified in cpr/first aid if you get the chance. he turned out to be ok, by the way.

on a lighter note, i was in a photo shoot last weekend for the 2005 fnf pin-up girls calendar. it was surprisingly a lot of fun, and i got to be one of the power tool girls (other months on the calendar involve ice skating girls, cowgirls, nurses, and of course, lingerie girls) the calendars should be coming out in a little less than a month. it'll be a fun and funny way to keep track of your days.

storms were heading towards chicago, so i packed the bags again and found myself in toledo.

i just caught sideways and really enjoyed it. at first it totally annoyed me, but then at some point i realized i was having a good time. and hey, i learned a lot about wine.

i performed the yang style straight sword form at my school's open house a few days ago. i was terrified for weeks that if i got the form wrong during the performance, my sifu (hao zhihua) would kick my freakin' butt. i got the form a little wrong, but she was very encouraging... and she didn't clean the floor with me.

what political parties do your credit card companies contribute to? i'm definitely going to need to move my money out of my mbna account.

for my birthday, the guys at work gave me the ed wood special edition dvd (i don't think i've ever heard ed wood compared to ayn rand before). they gave it to me, not only because i'm a sucker for burton and depp, but because there's a seven minute featurette on the theremin! it's comprised mostly of an interview with the composer, howard shore, and another interview with a 'theremin expert' who talks like a giant nerd and plays theremin really poorly.

11.13.04

i never miss laurie anderson when she's in town. that's why i was doubly excited to be able to see her perform her end of the moon show last night for my birthday! it only seemed fitting because i want to be laurie anderson when i grow up. in her monologue she said that she's 63 inches tall - which means i only have three more inches to go. (hah)

also, thanks to everyone for such great birthday wishes! it looked like my birthday was going to be super annoying (they turned down my request for the day off at work), but hearing from so many friends was definitely the happy maker.

what barry says is a nicely designed film about u.s. foreign policy from a foreign point of view. worth a look. (link via david s.)

our transition from shimmer kids to society of rockets is now official. why? because we now have a website. adam has posted a really extensive shimmer kids archive (with a ton of free music - it's been cool to hear how far we've progressed since the old tapes) and has made societyofrockets.org live and kicking.

...which brings me to my birthday show!! come see us play at a special frank chu celebration show at 12 galaxies this thursday, november 11th! when the clock strikes midnight on november 12th, i will turn another year older; please come by to enjoy some music, buy me drinks and bring me cake - let's give a toast to surviving another year and the promise of a new one!

i've been having several discussions with friends about whether to leave the country or not. i have to admit, i was on the fence about just picking up all my crap and moving away to somewhere far and foreign, but i've been talked out of it. to be honest, i was partially taunted out of it by being called a wimp. a coward. a euphemism for cat. for many reasons (including just the basic one of staying here with all the people i know and love) i've been convinced that the best thing to do is stay around and and get even more politically active than before. i'm a lover, not a fighter, but i'll fight for those i love.

adam forwarded this information about how difficult it is to expatriate yourself.

then josh forwarded me this list of ten reasons to not move to canada. (josh originally got this list from jay's magpie update at arthur magazine.)

in the middle of the midwest, i visited my godparents in chicago.

what's more annoying than being anxious about the election? involuntarily waking up an hour earlier (than my normal 6am) because of the time change and fretting about the potential election results.

11.01.04

yes, i've been nervous lately.

steve sent me this hunter s. thompson article on commondreams.org. it's a good read (although, really similar to an article he wrote in rolling stone a short bit ago)

my friend zach broke his back at burning man this year. he has to wear a back brace and his recovery sounds painful. he's been keeping us up to date on how he's doing at his site. send good thoughts his way.
