insects

we were sitting there in the arboretum and it was the dead of winter. the plants were standing naked in front of us with just scant remnants of leaves clinging on to their skinny branches.

"you know, brain transplants in insects happen all the time," said uri.

"what?"

"insects don't have nervous systems like we do... all their organs float around inside their body, so it's really easy for scientists to transplant the brain from one insect to another. you could put a fly brain in a grasshopper and the grasshopper would start acting like a fly. i mean... you couldn't do this yourself, but people have done it."

"they don't last for very long... the insects... they die pretty soon after the transplant, but it's interesting that it happens. in tokyo, there's this one lab where they've created a remote control cockroach. they replaced the cockroach's brain with a small chip and they can make it walk around and do thingsƒ i don't know what they want a cockroach to do, but those scientists in tokyo are pretty excited about it. the cockroach doesn't last very long either."

"that's either pretty impressive or a complete lie," i said to him.

"it's whatever you're most entertained with," he replied.
