spiritualized
- ladies and gentlemen we are floating in space
there isn't any other music out there that brings me closer to feeling like
i'm on drugs than this album right here. swirling guitars, heavy-lidded basslines
and somniferous vocals requires that you do not listen to this music while
operating heavy machinery.
ella fitzgerald
- live in berlin
i'm addicted to ella fitzgerald live albums. ella fitzgerald live in berlin
is the first time that she improvises and makes famous her version of mack
the knife (which she introduces by saying 'we've never heard a girl sing it').
and as if that wasn't already worth my money, she then busts out with cole
porter's 'lorelei'.
esquivel
- cabaret manana
this is the first album when i realized that folks in the 50's were hipper
than i thought. it's music for martinis and the space program.
johnny cash
- live in folsom prison
except for comedy acts and ella fitzgerald, i used to think that live albums
were useless. they never sounded that much different than their studio performances
and there's little authentic interaction with the audience. johnny cash not
only manages to get the prisoners to nearly riot, but it's great to hear him
giving the wardens a hard time.
feelies
- crazy rhythms
i'm not sure what it is about this album that makes me addicted to it. it
might be something simple like the fact that there's a random amount of silence
between each song, or maybe because the guitar riff for the boy with perpetual
nervousness makes me think of a boy with perpetual nervousness. i think it's
just because it's an excellent album.
pixies
- come on pilgrim
every time i hear this record i find myself shouting the lyrics at the top
of my lungs. this sometimes poses a problem.
they might
be giants - lincoln
i don't want the world. i just want your half. <4.26.00>
